'68 GT500KR 8T02R210201-03585 Project car

Factory Candyapple Red genuine KR fastback with automatic trans, ten spoke wheels and tilt steering. The ten spokes are believed to be originals but were added during the 1980's, the car originally had wheel covers.

I bought this KR from the original owner in 2003. It was sold new in Indianapolis, Indiana and I found it only a few miles from the original selling dealership, Ed Martin Ford. The car has an colorful early history, which was related to me by the owner at the time and I have 3 pages of handwritten notes detailing it all.

The mileage is an actual 71,958. The history includes one minor accident in 1976. The owner's cousin repaired it and replaced some of the front end fiberglass and one fender. All of the parts were still available from Ford at the time so they are OEM original. One headlight remains the Ford script original. The car was also repainted at that time. It is intact and solid underneath except for the bottom of the passenger side torque box. The floors and frame rails are otherwise original and solid. The bottoms of the exterior quarters have been repaired but the trunk floors and rear rails are solid.

The engine seized up around 1996 and the owner pulled it out to replace it in 1997 or 98 but never got around to completing the job. The original engine was gone, I received a CJ engine and trans with the car but they are not the original. The engine is dated 8L4 (Nov 4, 1968), I have access to an 8D30 (April 30, 1968) dated CJ engine but this is not included. The car was built June 6, '68 so it is only five weeks prior.

The trans tag is PGB-W which the Shelby registry says is correct for a '68 GT500 but the KR takes a PGB-AF, The difference is probably a cast iron tail shaft. The rear is original with WFD-A tag and 3L50 ratio (locking 3:50) and the differential case casting date is 8D26 (April 15, 1968).

I had both the engine and trans professionally rebuilt and have the receipts for this available. The engine and trans are out but the car is otherwise together and a roller. The engine is assembled to a short block. Most of the parts are intact to assemble the car, they are not shown in the photographs.

The interior is original and in good condition, no rips or tears except for the headliner. All of the Shelby unique interior parts are intact, including the inertia reels and shoulder harnesses.

This would be a great Shelby to restore and presents a good opportunity at a realistic price. In my shop and available now.
